Master Hare Watches Over New York

If you live in New York and have seen this banner on Centre Street in Manhattan, then you have been stared down by Master Hare drawn by lil’ ol’ me! Master Hare is featured in a four page short story, Master Tortoise and Master Hare, written by Howard Wong and arted by me in the upcoming Shattered: The Asian American Comics Anthology which you can pre-order at your local comic book shop using Diamond Previews code SEP121160. The book ships in November.

Back to Master Hare. He’s advertising the upcoming “Alt.Comics: Asian American Artists Reinvent the Comic Book” exhibition at the Museum of Chinese in America that runs from September 27, 2012 to February 24, 2013. On display will be artwork from the Shattered book along with some of the stuff I did for Master Tortoise and Master Hare! There’s going to be an opening reception which should be all kinds of fun. I won’t be able to make it, but you should totally go and meet some of the other creators! Take lots of photos!

So, um, yeah, I’m crazy excited! I never thought that I would ever have anything hanging in a museum ever in my life so this is insane!

Wonder Woman Heads Back to the Amazon

It seems like Wondy just can’t catch a break. Warner Bros scuttled her big screen debut (they’re probably kicking themselves with Joss’s success on the Avengers flick) and the NBC reboot of the television series died before it even made it to air. Warner Bros and DC are hoping that a third time will be a charm so they’re sending Wonder Woman to the CW for a reboot called Amazon.

The show will focus on Diana’s early years before she became strapped on the red and gold bustier. That’s right, she’s getting the Smallville treatment.

Somebody SAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAVE MEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Obama Facepalm

Unfortunately, this may actually work. Smallville kicked it for ten seasons and attracted a diverse audience that traditional Superman comics never reached. Amazon could have the same potential of broadening Wonder Woman’s appeal. I mean, who doesn’t love a teenage, angsty, origin story.

It’s in scripting form now. CW hasn’t ordered a pilot just yet so we don’t know who they’re considering for the role. I think Miracle Laurie would be a good choice. Her role on Dollhouse wasn’t exactly the best, but she pulled off the action scenes pretty well. It would probably best if they cast an unknown, though. Build some young talent.

Meh. Very mixed feelings. On the one hand, I think it’s high time Wonder Woman got something. I would have loved to have seen Joss Whedon’s take on the character, but that’s not going to happen. The NBC thing really sucked. But she deserves some proper screen time. On the other hand, I truly despise everything that’s on the CW. It is not an enjoyable channel to stop on.

More as it develops.

“If I can’t protect TV, you can be damn sure I’ll avenge it!”

Like a moth to a flame, Joss Whedon returns to television. AZM Ally Jeff Posey writes in with word that Marvel’s S.H.I.E.L.D. television series is getting a pilot with Joss Whedon possibly directing. If it’s picked up, the series will be produced by Joss and Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen.

So I know a lot of people are really excited about this as am I. But there’s part of me that’s a little worried. Joss has had a wild ride when it comes to television. Buffy was certainly a big hit. Angel had some problems being bounced to different networks. Firefly was a complete disaster thanks to Fox. Dollhouse… was a thing that I watched for some reason. In all four instances, the studios interfered and at times, got entirely in the way of production.

Now granted, this time is slightly different. Marvel is the studio behind this and they already love Joss to death. If any studio is going to be hands-off and let Joss do what he does best, it’s Marvel. Also, Joss and company really know how to handle an ensemble cast. It all depends on how much Marvel trusts Joss and crew. I don’t think they’ll want to screw that relationship up with him helming the sequel to the biggest Marvel movie they’ve had yet. I’m hoping for the best.

No word on casting. It would be awesome to have Samuel L. Jackson and Cobie Smulders make cameos in the pilot. But I really want Dichen Lachman to have a part. I know she’s working on some other show, but she needs to be an ass kicking S.H.I.E.L.D. agent!

The Bat Man of Shanghai

I think Canadian viewers can watch it here

Wolf Smoke’s “Bat Man of Shanghai” is one of the best interpretations of the material that I’ve ever seen! Set in the 1930’s, Catwoman, Bane, and Bat Man fight over the Scroll of Destiny. These shorts were broadcast on Cartoon Network’s as part of the DC Nation. The animation is so fiercely raw. Totally feels like one of the classic Shaw Brothers kung fu flicks except with TRON eyes. I’m also loving the redesigns of the costumes, although I think Catwoman’s is the most successful. Bane’s is a bit too close to the original for my taste, and I think more could have been done with Bats. But it’s still fucking aweseome! I need this as a regular series. NEED!

“Are you trying to fit into a cat suit?”

Jerry Penacoli is clearly asking for his dick to be punched. Fortunately for him, Anne Hathaway is a classy lady and deftly owns him when he lingers on the “feline fitness regimine” question a little too long.

This is the same ass hat who annoyed the shit out of Scarlet Johansson about her underwear.

More dick punching. I’m surprised Jeremy didn’t kick Jerry in the dick place.

Seriously, how is this guy still employed? You have two women portraying characters that both have a tremendous history behind them and all you care about is how they fit into their costumes?

Okay, if you have to ask about their wardrobe, how about, “Did the costume make you feel more like a comic book hero or did it feel more like Halloween” or something along those lines. We’re interested in their characters, if they researched the comics, if they had any special insights from the directors on their characters. Do they read the comics now that they’ve portrayed the characters? Why waste so much time with questions about wardrobe when it’s pretty fucking obvious you need to work your ass off to squeeze into those costumes? Fuck!

I worry that if Warner Bros ever does a proper Wonder Woman movie, the woman portraying her will get all these questions about her physique and diet and all that other bullshit and absolutely none about her character.

Sad Bane is Saaaaaad

Were you among the bajillions who went out to see Dark Knight Rises opening weekend? It was a lot of fun. There was a little twist that I should have seen coming but totally got drawn in so it was a big surprise. I can’t wait for the DVD so I can watch all three in a row. I really think this makes an excellent trilogy.

I’ll have to go back and watch them all, but I think the second one might still be my favorite of the bunch. I kind of felt this one took itself way too seriously. Don’t get me wrong, I had a blast in the theater and wouldn’t mind seeing it again. But there were a lot of bits that I couldn’t help laughing at horribly.

So for the benefit of those who didn’t brave the opening weekend crowds, I shall make fun of the movie behind the cut.

Neil Gaiman Returns to Sandman

If you read through Sandman, there are bits and pieces of stories yet to be told. Sometimes characters refer to events from decades, even centuries past that are never revisited. Sometimes the narration hints at things that remain mysteries. And honestly, I was okay with not knowing. I don’t feel like Sandman is diminished with these loose threads left around. If anything, it kind of adds to the world of the books.

That said, I’m glad it’s Gaiman himself coming back to tell the tale of what came before Book 1. If it was anyone else, I don’t think I’d be able to contain my anger. Also, JH Williams is a phenomenal illustrator. Fuck, just look at this teaser image:

Can you imagine and entire book of this stuff? This is a comic’s dream team. So very looking forward to this next year!
