Fu Manchu? Are you fucking kidding me?

South African movie company Distant Horizon plans to revive Fu Manchu. According to Distant Horizon president Anant Singh:

We will reinvent Fu Manchu as an anti-hero who fits in with a more socially conscious world and that addresses the very complex multipolar world we all live in today. We have already begun to discuss Fu’s rebirth with a number of exciting talents in Hong Kong and mainland China.

You know what, as an Asian American, I’m just gonna go ahead and say that you don’t have to do this. Sure, Fu Manchu was a horrible caricature of us that was incredibly insulting created for a people who were afraid of anyone who didn’t look like them. Fu Manchu was created in a more racist and fearful time. We get that. We’re over it. You don’t need to apologize to us by reinventing Fu Manchu. Really, he wasn’t our character to begin with. We don’t like him. We don’t identify him. In fact, we’d rather forget about him.

Even if this isn’t some sort of strange apology for racist depictions of Asians, this sounds like a bad idea. No good can come of this.

Imus Fired

Well shit, Imus got canned.

Instead of fading away into obscurity, which would have been a more fitting punishment, now Imus is a fucking super star. Everyone knows his name. And he’s going to make more than bank with his next gig. You can be shit sure he’s going to get a sweet deal on satellite. Or fucking Fox News will pick his crusty old ass up.

I have to take back what I said about firing him. I don’t like his show at all and I don’t think it should be on the air, but that has nothing to do with what he said. I don’t think he’s funny. But firing him over “nappy headed ho’s” sets a dangerous precedent. Now, not only can’t you say those deadly swear words on the air, but you can’t insult anyone. What the fuck kind of message is that? How can you do comedy without insulting someone?

I’m as liberal as the next hippie and I really, really hate to defend a douche bag like Don the fuck Imus. But dammit, grow the fuck up. So what he called you nappy headed. Ignore his old ass and move the fuck on. Don’t give him that power over you. And certainly don’t turn him into a martyr for free speech. We have the right to turn him off. We have the right to not listen to him. We have to right to make his ratings go down the shitter. So just turn him off and move on. If we all ignored him, he’d be off the air anyway.

We’re going backwards here. This rave out against Imus is so damaging to our ethnic culture. It takes us further away from an honest dialog about race and ethnicity in this country that has need to take place ever since the Civil Rights movement. We’re moving backwards, people.

Why is it okay for black people to use the N word when no one else can? Why is it okay to insult white people? Why don’t we hold people like Sharpton and Jesse Jackson accountable for hateful speech against Jews and other white people? Is it okay not to like people? There are questions that we as a society must deal with. There’s a dialog that is not taking place which desperately needs to start. We need to get through this race mess so that we can all agree on being American.

The Don and Mike show and the Donnie Simpson morning show here in D.C. want to get together to host a radio round table to openly discuss race. I hope that CBS has the balls to allow this conversation to happen. We need this discussion because the victim of this continual fight is free speech. We need to turn this corner so we can get on with the business of being Americans. We’ve spent the last six years being divided. It’s time we come together on something dammit.

Worst Argument Ever

Here’s Snoop Dog responding to the charge that rappers use much worse language than Don Imus:

It’s a completely different scenario. [Rappers] are not talking about no collegiate basketball girls who have made it to the next level in education and sports. We’re talking about ho’s that’s in the ‘hood that ain’t doing shit, that’s trying to get a nigga for his money. These are two separate things. First of all, we ain’t no old-ass white men that sit up on MSNBC going hard on black girls. We are rappers that have these songs coming from our minds and our souls that are relevant to what we feel. I will not let them muthathafuckas say we in the same league as him.

This must be one of the most ignorant things ever to come out of Snoop’s mouth. Jumping on Imus because he’s a crusty old white man is just as racist as him calling black women nappy-headed ho’s. Certainly referring to yourself as a “nigga” is worse than nappy-headed. And you can’t end a defense of your use of invectives against women with a mothafucka. How can Snoop take himself seriously?

All the indignation from the media over what Imus said rings completely false. If they really had a problem with him, they wouldn’t go on his show to promote themselves. This is not the first time Imus has insulted people of different ethnicities. That’s what his stupid ass show is all about. There’s always been an underlying thread of racism on his show and no one’s called him on it before. It’s a little late now to get upset over it all. They’ve all been on his stupid show for shit’s sake! It’s a slow news cycle and people are tired of hearing about the war and that’s the only reason why this is such a big fucking deal.

What Imus said was insulting to be sure. It hardly raises to the level of what the Grease Man or Michael Richards or Isaiah Washington said. And if you’re going to fire him for insulting people, hell, you have to fire all the other radio personalities who do comedy shows. Comedy is about insulting people. And in the context of a comedy show, Imus is going to insult people. Now we can argue the merits of his comedy until he drops dead. I don’t find his show at all funny. But if he’s doing a comedy show, he’s going to insult people.

Let’s not get it twisted. Imus should be fired. Hell, he should have been fired ages ago. He’s not funny. He’s not relevant. And no one should get upset if he insults you because let’s face it, you probably never heard his show until this shit all blew up. Fire him because he’s old and crusty and not at all funny. But if you’re going to fire him for insulting someone, please. He didn’t use the “n-bomb.” He didn’t use the “Cee yoU iN Toledo” or any of the other words that would get you fined by the FCC. Hell, the Fugees had a hit song called “Nappy Heads.” If rappers can say “Bitch,” “Nigga,” and “Ho,” and if Sharpton and Jesse get to insult Jews, Imus gets to say “nappy.”

Why anyone gives a shit what this crusty old man has to say is beyond me. Yeah, he’s wrong. Yeah, he should be fired because he’s a boring fuck. But if being called a “nappy-headed ho” scars you for life, you, my dear, have some other issues to work out. Don’t give him that kind of power.

Part Legend, Part Devil, All Man

“That’s just to satisfy your curiosity.”

Best. Line. Ever!

Okay, besides the title of the movie, this is actually pretty empowering. Two Black guys roll in to an old West town and take it over. They impose their own laws and even fine mother fuckers for calling them “nigger” in public. Doesn’t get much better than that!

Blaxploitation FTW!

Obama, Black as Circumstances Allow?

This is really a question of semantics that in the end, distracts from the fact that for the first time in our history, a minority has a good shot at being the next President. Who cares if he’s “Black” or an African African American. People should vote for or against Obama based on whether or not they think he can lead our country. Can he do the job? Can he lead our country? Those are the questions we need to be asking, not is he Black or Brown or Mauve.

Snickers Vies For “Dumb Ass of the Year” Award

It seems that America just can’t live without its “niggers.” American Indians, African Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanic Americans, Arab Americans, hell, even women have all been America’s “nigger” at some point in our short history. America has always looked for groups of people to oppress, to ridicule. The American Indians had their land taken and are now forced to live on reservations. African Americans endured slavery and continued racism throughout American history. Japanese Americans were interred in World War II. Hispanic Americans are paid shit wages. Arab Americans are detained without cause. Women had to fight, FIGHT, for the right to vote. Does this sound like the proper treatment of people who live in the “land of the free?”

Homosexuals are America’s newest “niggers.” No longer satisfied with discriminating people based on race, now we’re discriminating people based on sexual preference. How stupid is that. This whole mess with the Snickers Super Bowl ad clearly illustrates the status of homosexuals in America.

You’d think that with shows like “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy,” “The L Word,” and “Queer as Folk” that America had finally gotten over its latent homophobia. Not so. The Snickers ad depict two grease-monkeys mistakenly kissing each other full on the mouth and then doing something “manly” to essentially reaffirm their heterosexuality.

Now, I’m not going to even attempt to argue that this stupid commercial rises to the level of a hate crime. No one was physically beaten because two dudes ate a Snickers that looked like a piece of floppy shit and locked lips. But if you put the commercial in a racial context, perhaps you can understand why people might take offense. Imagine someone prancing around in black face. There, I don’t even need to go any further.

The commercial tacitly implies that being gay is somehow un-manly and that it’s okay to poke fun at homosexuals. A spokesperson for Masterfoods, Alice Nathanson, says that the ad even tested well:

As with all of our Snickers advertising, our goal was to capture the attention of our core Snickers consumer.

Feedback from our target consumers has been positive. In addition, many media and website commentators of this year’s Super Bowl commercial line-up ranked the commercial among this year’s top ten best. USA Today ranked it 9 of its top ten picks.

Tested well? That’s your fucking excuse?

It’s not okay to make fun of homosexuals for being homosexuals just like it’s not right for making fun of Asians for being Asians or Blacks for being Black. It’s not okay to make fun of people because of who they are. Now, if they do stupid shit, gloves are off. Clearly, people should be made fun of for things they do!

It’s about damn time that we as Americans judge people on their character, not their ethnicity or their sexuality or gender. These are mere features of a whole person. They do not define people in their entirety. I am not just a heterosexual Asian male. I am much more.

I am Jamie Kane Noguchi.

And when I do stupid shit, I expect to be made fun of!

Bigot Rehab?

I know it’s old news at this point, but if I’m going rail against Michael Richards for his judicious use of the KKK-friendly word “nigger” instead of the rapper-friendly word “nigga,” I’ve got to give some time to Isaiah Washington and his use of the word “faggot.”

Isaiah Washington allegedly referred to Grey’s Anatomy co-star T.R. Knight a “faggot” within ear shot. At the Golden Globes, Washington responded to the allegations:

T.R. Knight responded to Washington’s statement on Ellen’s show:

Washington finally owned up to the allegations admitting that he had some issues to work out and was entering rehab. There’s bigot rehab now? When did this shit happen. Apparently, he’s much better now and ready to join the rest of us.

I don’t care that Isaiah Washington hates gay people. I don’t care that Michael Richards hates black people. No amount of rehab will change the way you feel about someone unless you want to change the way you feel. Be all homophobic or racist all you want. But do it on your own time in your own damn home.

I do care when that homophobia or racism affects other people. It’s the actions that these people take that infuriates me. Does calling someone a “faggot” rise to the level of a hate crime? I wouldn’t go that far. But in any working environment, you should feel safe to be yourself. Clearly, Knight is uncomfortable working with Washington which will affect the show in a bad way (not that I give two shits about Grey’s Anatomy).

There’s another side to consider in all of this. Words are just words. You can choose how you react to hateful words. If you choose to let them have power over you, words like “nigger” or “faggot” will always hurt you. They will control an aspect of your life. If you choose to exert your power over words, words can never control you. I’ve been called “Cchink” and “Jap” before and it used to really bother me. I felt angry that someone would see me as anything other than who I am. But getting angry gives these words power over me and I am no longer willing to let anyone or anything control me. So call me anything you want. I know who I am and that’s good enough to me.

In the end, I think that both Isaiah Washington and Michael Richards are incredibly stupid for the words they used. I think both of them are suffering the consequences for those actions. I don’t watch Grey’s Anatomy anyway so I couldn’t care less if Washington got fired. You slur someone’s sexuality or ethnicity in an office and you’d probably get fired. Either way, I couldn’t care less about him. I do hope that T.R. Knight will rise above this and not let slurs hold power over him. Washington doesn’t deserve that kind of power over him and as a black man, he should have damn well known better.
