The Battle for Gobwin Knob rages on!

Hollywood Desperately Seeking Comic Books Because All They Can Come Up With is Dubious Karate Kid Remake

Mighty Avengers

AZM Ally Greg passed along a list of 75 comics that are coming to the big screen as feature films. The slate seems very Marvel heavy. A lot of usual suspects and some titles that we’ve heard rumors about for a while now (looking at you Battle Angel Alita). Warren Ellis’s Red is absolutely perfect for the big screen. It was kind of a sleeper mini series, but I loved it to bits. Has a very modern noir feel to it with plenty of action and an actual plot. Runaways also seems like it’s made for live action, although, I think it might work better as a television series. Frank Miller is helming Hard Boiled and I hope to god he remembers to put some damn color in the fucking film. If Hard Boiled looks like Sin City, someone seriously needs to kick Frank out of Hollywood.

The door is wide open for comic creators to make ungodly sums of money from film rights. Some may even get a shot at working in the film industry. Fans get to see their favorite characters come to live on the big screen. And it’s clear that Hollywood needs some fresh ideas, even though many of these comic properties are decades old. For Hollywood, these titles come with an established fan base who are more likely than not to see these things in the theater. And with the proven financial successes of Spider-Man, Dark Knight, and Iron Man, comic book flicks are serious, cash-money business.

Greg also mentioned that he was looking forward to an Erfworld movie. Certainly, Rob and I would love it if a producer suddenly showed up at our doorsteps with ungodly sums of money just waiting to be thrown at us. Of course, the question is do you do an Erfworld animated or live action feature? Besides Parson, all of my character designs have GINORMOUS, unnatural heads! Do you ignore that and just film it live action anyway and do some forced-perspective ala Lord of the Rings? And now to the real question, who would you cast in an Erfworld movie? Time for the Erfworld casting game! I’m most curious as to who people would want to see as Wanda. She’s the one character who truly frightens the shit out of both me and Rob.

Happy Zombie! From Erfworld!

Erfworld 116

Erfworld 116 went up during Gundam Wednesday, but I thought it’d be more fun to talk about it today. In a few sentences, Rob managed to make my life hell drawing this one frame, “Wanda uncroaks thousands of Jetstone troops. Oh, and their armor changes color and emblem.” But I think the results were worth it. I actually enjoy trying to fit in lots of little guys in crowd scenes. You can cheat the background characters as long as there are some strong focal characters in the foreground. Enjoy! And Happy Halloween from Erfworld!

Erfworld Gets Your Dwagon In a Headlock

Erfworld 115

Erfworld 115 is up. Record time! I just handed the page to Rob to letter only twelve hours ago! My favorite bit is the Transylvitian warlord pummeling the blue dwagon in a headlock. We also discover one of the silly limitations of this world controlled by game mechanics. Curse you invisible hex barriers! If we had another frame, the vision I had for Jillian’s splooshed gwiffon is crazy.

Erfworld 114

Erfworld 114 is up and running. Looks like Big Red is going to have some stomach problems in the near future. I love drawing battle scenes, especially with Jillian. I always try to throw her into some insane pose that I’d love to see filmed.

The fall con season is starting to wreck havoc on my update schedule which is weird. I didn’t really plan on hitting many cons at all until the book was finished, but all of sudden, everyone wants to see Super Art Fight.

Anyway, enjoy more Erfyness.

Erfworld Unleashes Van der Graaf

Erfworld 113

Erfworld 113 went up over the weekend. In this one, Stanley unleashes the fury of the Arkenhammer. In panel four, we get our leather daddy, dark Mario warlord facing off with one of the KISS army doing their best “Beat It” knife fight impression. Dance fighting FTW! My favorite panel is Ceaser doing his ninja drop kick. More drop kicks more of the time!

Erfworld Loves it Loud!

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008 at 1:05 pm by Jami

Meant to post this before, but Erfworld page 111 is up and running in which we introduce dance fighting. If you’re unfamiliar with the songs we’re spoofing, here’s the Jets song from West Side Story

and KISS with “Love it Loud”

The thousands of bats that are coming out of the Transylvitian capes are all thanks to a nice brush I made when we first introduced Vinny. Love that Photoshop. My favorite part of this page has to be Stanley rocking the Arkenhammer like a guitar.

Erfworld Page 110

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008 at 9:05 am by Jami

Page 110 is up! Trying my best to get two of these out per week. This week, we see Jack starting to clear up the cobwebs in his broken brain meats. The second panel, I was attempting to channel some Jack Nicholson in the smile. I had that scene where Jack as the Joker just sits there and says “boop. Boop.”

There are little doombats flying out of the Transylvitians (god I hope I spelled that right). I forgot them when I sent the page over to be lettered so it looks like Rob stuck them back in there. Also, he added the warlords in the ninth panel. Sometimes if a correction is too drastic, he’ll throw the page back to me. Most of the time he’ll handle art corrections. I really like the detailing in the close-up of Stanley’s red Dwagon armor. I want a sculpt of that guy some day.

The Arkentools are all actually modeled in Maya which is a pretty silly use for such a powerful program. It’s like using a jackhammer to staple a report together. Overkill. I did contemplate modeling, lighting, and rendering all the sets, but that would take even more time. Someday, I’ll have the time to do an Erfworld short, but for now, it’s all hand drawing and digital painting.

Erfworld Page 109

Friday, September 12th, 2008 at 8:56 am by Jami

I should probably start pimping my own work, you know. Erfworld page 109 is up and running. I have a lot of fun drawing fights and battle scenes because I get to come up with completely unrealistic weapons and camera angles that would be expensive to do on a film set. Panel 9 is the only real big action scene. I framed it so that the flying gobwin would be the major focus of that panel. And of course, no action would be complete without speed lines! Speed lines make everything look faster!
