It seems like Fourze will have two episode arcs much like OOO and Double. This week, we learn all about the Zodiarts, the belt, and Kengo. Spoilers!
With such a long history, it’s difficult to refrain from comparing the current Kamen Rider series to past shows. Kamen Rider OOO had many trappings of Kamen Rider Kuuga. Kamen Rider W reminded some of the original series. Kamen Rider Fourze will inevitably draw comparisons with Kamen Rider Faiz. Both feature high school students. Both have lead characters with giant chips on their shoulders. Both have giant mechs. So I suspect my early reviews will make references to Faiz.
A note on where to get these things. Since there’s no official channel to actually purchase English language Kamen Rider, we have to turn to fansubs. Kamen Rider Faiz in its entirety can be found here. Fansubs for Fourze can be found here.
Kamen Rider Fourze is written by Kazuki Nakashima, the insane genius behind the screenplay for Gurren Lagann. The main director for the series is Koichi Sakamoto who directed the Kamen Rider W films, episodes of Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger, and did action directing on a number of American Power Rangers. So it’s little surprise that this first episode is bursting at the seams with actiony goodness. I like to think of Fourze as “Kamina goes to High School.”
For an intro episode, “The Transformation of Youth” has a lot of action. Gentaro’s introduction is fucking hysterical. I instantly like him. Despite his questionable hair choice (warning to the youth of Japan, the pompadour is not to be emulated), he’s a welcome breath of fresh air. We’ve had wussy Riders, emo Riders, arrogant Riders, happy idiot Riders, but I think this is the first time we’ve had a straight up Hot Blooded Rider. I swear, Gentaro is a big haired Kamina.
The first henshin sequence reminds me a lot of Takumi’s henshin from Faiz. In Faiz, Mari slaps the belt on Takumi, dials the right numbers on the phone, and transforms Takumi into Faiz. Yuki does the same thing to Gentaro slapping the belt on him and showing him the proper henshin series of poses.
The only character I really can’t stand is Kengo. He’s got a big chip on his shoulder which has something to do with his body. I’m guessing he’s got some kind of physical condition that makes him too weak to use the Fourze driver or pilot that big mech for an extended period of time. It also makes him an insufferable asshole much like Kusaka in Faiz. I hope this changes over the run of the series.
Overall, I think I’m hooked. Forget the five episode rule. This first episode entertained me enough that I’ll stick with it. I like most of the characters, the action looks silly and awesome, rocket pawnch is as epic as I thought it would be, and fucking Drill Rider Kick is full of YES!
When the preview for the first episode of Kamen Rider Fourze premiered at the end of the last episode of OOO, I couldn’t stop laughing. I don’t know if that’s a good sign or a bad sign, but I’m kinda looking forward to the new Rider. I think he looks really stupid and the idea of another high school Rider show harkens back to Faiz, but fuck it, I’ll give it a few episodes. I think I’m going to start reviews of Rider and Sentai episodes like I’m starting with Doctor Who.
My favorite band in the whole damn universe, Peelander Z just released a greatest hits album, SUPER DX HITS! The CD/DVD combo pack includes five karaoke music videos so you can Peelander the Z out at your next karaoke party.
Here’s the video for “S.T.E.A.K.”
And here’s a “Mad Tiger.”
I was sad to hear that the 1/1 Scale Gundam was being put into storage. I was more sad when I heard that it was not being sent to me. Well, AZM Ally Terrance Wong sends word that the 1/1 RX-78 Gundam is back! Sorta.
From August 13–21, the 1/1 scale Gundam will be displayed in pieces at Symbol Promenade Park in Odaiba. This is pretty cool because you’ll get an up-close look at the bits you wouldn’t have been able to see unless you had a big ass lens on your camera or helped build the thing. You’ll even get to sit in the right hand.
You should definitely check out Gundam Guy’s post. The photos are amazing and probably as close as you’re going to get to seeing this thing up close unless you live in Japan. I really wish it would go on a world tour. I’d absolutely mess my pants to see it!

I don’t really like the design of the Beginning Gundam, but I’m not gonna lie. I freaking love this OVA series! It’s just so freaking meta and cute and awesome and actually makes me want to build gunpla all day long. Gunpla Battle is a pretty fun concept. I once kit-bashed an old 1/144 Sentinel and a Gene Simmons into a KISS Sentinel. That would have been awesome to pilot in a Gunpla Battle.
I’m actually surprised at how much I like this. It’s not UC. I dislike the Beginning Gundam. But it’s just too adorable to really hate. It’s like Gunpokemon! I think if AGE is anything like this, I might have to jump back on the Gundam anime wagon.
Maybe Kamen Rider OOO has kinda softened me up a bit regarding my Rider tastes, but I have to say, I don’t instantly hate Fourze. The cast photos that have been released totally make it look like Kamen Rider Glee, especially the cheerleader uniform which is almost a direct rip of William McKinley High School’s Cheerio squad. The main dude’s massive pompadour makes me laugh. And Fourze’s bamboo shoot head is too cute to take seriously. But he has literal rocketo pawnch which is pretty awesome.
I think if OOO was a stronger show, I might be more violently opposed to it. The transition from Double to OOO was a painful one. But I’m kinda tired of Eiji and Brotou. I’m actually ready for Kamen Rider Glee.
