This is NOT Tezuka’s Astro Boy

I never really had much of an opinion of this Astro Boy flick from Imagi. Seemed like it could be a lot of fun. Looked vastly different than the Mighty Atom I’ve seen before, but I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. Then Ananth handed me a Black Jack manga and I was hooked. Osamu Tezuka’s work is absolutely wonderful! So now that I’ve become a gigantic Tezuka fan and I’ve just seen this trailer, I can tell you right the fuck now that this is NOT Tezuka’s Astro Boy.

My biggest problem is that the CG Astro Boy doesn’t look like Mighty Atom. You can tell it’s supposed to be the same character, but the proportions are all wonky. CG Astro is missing that Tezuka flair. The other characters look nothing like anything Tezuka would draw. It’s like looking at a faded shadow of Tezuka’s work!

Now if you’re not a Tezuka fan or don’t know an Astro Boy from a Mighty Atom, looking like the source material won’t make much of a difference. And I’m sure they’re targeting kids instead of the hardcore Tezuka geeks. From that angle, this still looks like it could be a lot of fun.

So I’m a bit torn. On the one hand, I can’t separate my feelings for Tezuka’s work. It’s so fucking good. I want my CG Astro Boy to look like it came out of Tezuka’s pen. It doesn’t. But on the other hand, this looks like a fun little family flick and we need more of those that don’t suck. I might end up seeing a matinĂ©e of this when it drops.

Robocop Comes to DC

It’s Cherry Blossom Festival time here in Washington, D.C. and the festivities kick off this weekend! This is Kenichi Ebina and this Saturday, he’ll be performing at the National Building Museum at 4pm. My mom will actually be performing sometime as well as part of a sword and jo demonstration outside at 11am and 1:30pm (I think). Audrey and I will probably be there in the afternoon to catch my mom kicking much ass and then watch this guy dance. If you’re in the area and don’t have anything else to do, come on down and check it out!

Cat Shit One Animated Series

AZM Ally Solkana sent along this amazing trailer for a new CG anime called Cat Shit One. It’s based on a manga of the same name. The manga, set in the Vietnam War, features recon group Cat Shit One as they sneak about the jungles of Vietnam. It appears that it’s been updated to the war on terror for the animated series. Each nationality is represented by a specific animal. Americans are bunnies because a USA GI spells “usagi” which means rabbit in Japanese. I’m not sure if the show will reflect the animal nationalities of the manga, but the Vietnamese are cats, French are pigs, Chinese are pandas, Japanese are monkeys, Russians are bears, Koreans are dogs, Brits are rats, and Aussies are kangaroos and koalas.

The manga was translated as Apocalypse Meow for the U.S. market, but Cat Shit One is so much better. I may have to track down the manga. Sounds quite awesome. And the show looks like it could be quite good.

HJU Radio Episode 2 Part 1

HJU Radio

Episode 2 of HJU Radio is go! Actually, the episode is so amazing it had to be split in two! This is kind of a tease since the second part, the guys will be talking about Dragon Knight, Power Rangers RPM, and Kamen Rider Decade. But if you’re starving from good toku talk, this is a good place to start. Looking forward to part 2!

Mobile Suit Gundam 0081 Coming to PS3

This has to be one of the worst game trailers I’ve ever seen. No animation, no game play footage. Just a bunch of still shots and barely any shots of the Gundam RX-78-7. I don’t read Japanese so I have no idea if the text indicates what type of game this will be, strategy, RPG, Gundam Musou. Oh man, a UC 0083 Gundam Musou game would kick so much ass! Anyone out there have a better idea of what this will be?
