When the big budget blockbuster flicks have let you down, there are plenty of independent films eagerly waiting for you!

Me Love Ping Pong Long Time!

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008 at 8:34 am by Jami

This trailer for Ping Pong Playa had me rolling! This is exactly the type of movie that I never knew I was waiting for. It’s been a while since I’ve seen an American produced movie with a predominantly Asian cast where no one does any kung fu fighting. About fucking time! Although, ping pong is also kind of stereotypically a Chinese sport, but I’ll take it. This looks like a lot of fun. Unfortunately, it’s so indy that it’s not playing at a theater near me. Poop! I think they’re running premiers in California so you west coast Angry Zen Masters will have to check it out and report back. I really want to see this on the big screen, but if I have to wait, I’ll freaking buy the DVD as soon as it drops!

Raimi, McGuire, and a Spider

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008 at 8:32 am by Jami

Sam Raimi

AZM Ally Greg sends word that Sam Raimi and Toby McGuire have signed on for Spider-Man 4 and 5. No word on plot or potential villains so that’s still up for speculation. Also not confirmed is Kirsten Dunst’s return as Mary Jane Watson. In the past, she’s intimated that she would return to the franchise under the right circumstances and looked forward to working with Raimi sometime in the future. With Raimi and McGuire back on, it probably won’t get any righter. I imagine it’s only a matter of time before she signs on. Gone is the black costume which indicates that we won’t be getting a Return of the Dark Spider flick. Thank gods. Dark Disco Pete was admittedly one of the more amusing character changes from the third flick, but honestly he doesn’t fit. We want the real Peter Parker back in action. I’d also like to see Bryce Dallas Howard return as Gwen Stacy, but I don’t think that’s going to happen. There are rumblings of filming 4 and 5 back to back since it was difficult to get Raimi and McGuire signed on. I also find it interesting they’re talking 4 and 5 and not a 6th.

So what’s next for Pete? The big wedding? They kind of set that up in the third and though Pete kind of screwed the pooch on that one, a very Spider wedding could be a nice life change. Throw in Black Cat and we got ourselves a very tangled web for Pete. Doc Conners is an obvious choice for a villain. I’d like to see a movie version of Lizard. Kraven the Hunter or even Vulture might be nice.

What would you all like to see in a fourth and fifth Spidey flick?

The Censor

Monday, August 11th, 2008 at 8:55 am by Jami

Angry Zen Minion Kevin Bahrt found this awesome short film starring Leo Skelly as The Censor, a psychotic BBFC censorship official who suddenly snaps and takes it upon himself to censor the real world. This was all put together for less than £20. And in a little twist of irony, they had to censor out the naughty bits to get it up on YouTube.

Return of The Legend of Neil!

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008 at 8:28 am by Jami

Legend of Neil

A little over a year ago, Angry Zen Minion Sammy D sent me episode one of The Legend of Neil. Through a freak masturbation/asphyxiation accident, Neil gets transported into the world of The Legend of Zelda where he must deal with the ridiculousness of game mechanics as if they were real life rules.

Finally, after a year, episode 2 has dropped with more to come. Episode 3 launches tomorrow, episode 4 launches on 8/14, episode 5 launches on 8/21, and episode 6 launches on 8/28. It’s pretty funny and decently produced. Can’t wait for more. There’s no embedding from the site so you’ll just have to head on over and witness the funny.

99 Bottles Beer Documentary!

Monday, August 4th, 2008 at 1:13 pm by Jami

AZM Ally Keith sent over this trailer for his friend’s documentary, 99 Bottles Documentary. Time for all of you microbrew enthusiasts to break out a few cold ones. And I quote:

Journey with us into the unique and exploding industry of the microbrewery industrial movement. Focusing on the region of southeastern Wisconsin, we will explore how this industry began to grow from a lose knit circle of home brewer basement boilers to an industry gaining an increasing foothold in a once oligarchic marketplace.

Come with us as we search for the taste, people, culture and history of Wisconsin’s craft brewing industry.

The movie premiers August 21st at Wisconsin’s Oriental Theater, 2230 North Farwell Ave, at 7pm. Tickets are $10 with half of the proceeds going to the Kiwanis Club’s annual Brew Fest fundraiser. Here’s hoping it eventually gets a wider release! Congrats guys and good luck!

Yellow Sticky Notes

Friday, July 18th, 2008 at 10:39 am by Jami

And I quote:

After realizing that yellow sticky note “to do” lists were consuming his life, animation filmmaker Jeff Chiba Stearns decided to visually self-reflect on his filmmaking journey by animating on the same sticky notes that caused him to ignore major world events for the last nine years. Animation meditation is blended with image, text, and an original musical score by Genevieve Vincent through the creation of a classically animated experimental film that was drawn straight ahead with only a black ink pen on over 2300 yellow sticky notes. Order a DVD at www.hapanimation.com.

Absolutely brilliant.

Frank Miller’s Spirit = Softcore Porn

Thursday, July 17th, 2008 at 9:04 am by Jami

Uh… wtf?

Sometimes I wonder if Frank Miller just sits back and laughs his ass off at the rest of us. His Spirit is a woman crazy psycho with a major Oedipus Complex. “Oh, the city is my mother and I totally want to bang her and stuff!” Seriously, what the fuck?

I’m not liking what I’m seeing. The visual style is like Sin City with some color thrown in. I guess I don’t mind it visually, but the tone of these previews is so dark, you could easily mistake this for a Sin City sequel. Sure, noir crime fiction can be dark. But this is skewing a little extreme.

Bully for Frank for getting to direct and make films and all, but the more I see, the more I’m inclined to sit The Spirit out.

G Goes Toku Old School

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008 at 1:58 pm by Jami

AZM ally Mike Dent sent me this trailer for an indy Tokusatsu film entitled G. Now I may not know Japanese, but I’m certain “G” stands for “GODDAMNGENIUS!” This looks like such fun.

I wonder why the giant monster genre never really caught on here. We’ve got King Kong and now Cloverfield and that’s about it. Both did fairly well at the box office, but we’ve yet to see more giant States side monsters. Instead, we get those dumb fucks making Disaster Movie. I’d even settle for a few giant monster B movies. You know, someday, when I’m old and have amassed a redonkulous amount of wealth, I shall produce naught but giant monster movies!

Uwe Boll Wins Best Director and Best Feature at the Hoboken International Film Festival

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008 at 9:10 am by Jami

“You see? Fucking genius right here!”

In a move that ensures that Uwe Boll will continue to make movies despite the internet hate machine, the Hoboken International Film Festival awarded him two giant honors. Resident AZM Uwe Boll watcher Tyler Anderson reports:

Ol’ Boll is probably feeling pretty good today, having won not one, but two awards from the Hoboken International Film Festival. Bolly was named best director and Postal was named the best of the festival, the first of which netted him a cool….$500 cash prize. Sure, it’s not much, But I’d be willing to bet that its more than he’ll make off residuals. This comes as a bit of a shocker considering the incident where everybody left a free screening of Postal was at that Hoboken festival.

Vince Desi had this to say;

“When the fans speak, WE WIN. We know this from our experience in the game industry and now the film business just confirms it. The continued success of the POSTAL franchise in all its forms is proof that democracy works; you cannot stop what’s in the hearts of the people. Freedom will always triumph over tyranny.”

…I’m just going to leave that one alone, too easy.

Wow. Just wow.

So what the fuck is going on here? Either the citizens of Hoboken know something we don’t or they live in an entirely different universe where the incredibly shitty is award worthy. Having never spent much time in New Jersey, I have no basis to make any kind of judgment. It does seem a bit odd. How can someone so reviled by fandom win two gigantic awards? And does fandom now owe Uwe Boll an apology?

I Can’t Believe I’m About To Post This But…

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008 at 11:10 pm by Jami

Cortharis dug up the opening scene to Uwe Boll’s Postal and, I’m going to burn in geek hell for this, but this shit is actually funny.

There is actual haha here! Yes, the end of the scene should probably have been cut. But, well fuck me, this was funny. If I can laugh at Robert Downey, Jr. in black face, certainly I can laugh at inept terrorists trying to figure out how many virgins they get to bang after fragging themselves.

The ending I’m not fond of. There are more elegant ways to jump into a title sequence that would equally serve the point. But dammit, I couldn’t help laugh at them phoning Osama.

I should now be beaten about the head and chest for publicly admitting to laughing at this. I’m so sorry I have failed the test.

Note: I did spend 2 hours sucking on marker fumes Sunday night so it’s more than possible my brain meats are damaged and my reason is less than it normally is (which is pretty broken to begin with).
