When Hollywood runs out of ideas, they go back to what works. Thus, we are assaulted year after year of sequels and remakes. Lament in horror as this category grows and grows like an evil plague of banality.

Emo Goku Comes to the CW

Friday, May 16th, 2008 at 10:21 am by Jami

Dragon Bawlz

Here’s Justin Chatwin as Goku looking like he just walked off the set of “Gossip Girl.” Audrey and I get two flavors of CW on our cable-less tele and I swear, the network is a factory for generic emo boys and vapid women.

Anyway, back to Chatwin. Just not feeling this. The only thing I’ve really seen him in was that Invisible movie. He had the same expression throughout the film which is slightly disturbing as I think if you suddenly found out you were a walking spirit, you’d show some emotion other than vacant emo stare. I just don’t see him as goofy, fun loving, slightly demented, Goku. You never see Goku without a big toothy grin unless he’s kicking some ass. And even then, he laughs his way through fights. I don’t know, maybe they’re trying to inject some seriousness into this thing.

Not sure who I would cast instead. Hell, not sure I would even bother making this thing. I always want to see more of Tony Jaa. He certainly has the action chops and I think he can pull off a big toothy grin while kicking major ass. Meh. Whatever. I think I’m genetically disposed to not like this.

Point Broken

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008 at 10:39 am by Jami

Point Break Indo

Since the release of Point Break, for the past seventeen years, hardcore fans of both Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze have vigorously petitioned for the two of them to work together again.

That sounds like load of festering donkey sperm I just made up in my brain meats, but it must be true because RGM Entertainment and Essential Entertainment are producing the sequel, Point Break: Indo. The sequel, written by W. Peter Iliff who penned the original, takes place 20 years after Swayze’s character escaped capture.

No word on casting or plot besides the fact that it will be filmed in Southeast Asia. Alls I know is, if Swayze isn’t there and Reeves isn’t there then I won’t be there either.

Batman, Animatrix Style

Friday, May 9th, 2008 at 8:56 am by Jami

Reader Nathan Yuen sent along this link with a trailer for Batman: Gotham Knight. The DVD release will feature six animated shorts from different directors. The preview looks amazing. There’s only a quick shot but one of them looks to be inspired by Murakami’s Superflat style. Brilliant!

DVD drops July 8. MUST. GET!

The Doctor Runs Cobra

Destro

Though the cast photos of the upcoming G.I. Joe live-action movie have generally filled me with meh, I am a big fan of Christopher Eccleston pictured here as a chromeless Destro. I quite liked him as the 9th Doctor so I could be convinced to actually buy a ticket at some point.

They seem to be casting a wide net with the marketing love fairly as multiple sites are carrying different photos. I’m not impressed so I didn’t bother collecting them, but Marty has a good run down of the various cast pics. I will say that Baroness with glasses is a million times better than Baroness without glasses. But the Baroness does not a movie make unless it’s some sort of freaky snake porn and then you’ve just gone too far.

Revenge of the Return of Summer Sequels

Monday, May 5th, 2008 at 10:55 am by Jami

Been a while since I handed out snap judgments on films that have yet to drop. Reader Kevin Bahrt sent along a slate of upcoming sequels, two original flicks, and a possible remake that are certainly snap judgment worthy. So let’s see if I can keep it to three sentences or less.

Jurassic Park 4

Jurassic Park 4, date TBA.
No.

Transformers 2

Transformers 2, June 26, 2009
Too many puny humans we don’t care about, not enough bots part 2.

Mummy Goes to China

Mummy Goes to China, August 1, 2008
Jet Li will kick major ass, but his performance won’t save this movie. Not as entertaining as Big Bird Goes to China.

The Happening

The Happening, June 13, 2008
About as coherent as a 50s and 60s style happening.

You Don't Mess With The Zohan

You Don’t Mess With The Zohan, June 6, 2008
Shamed to admit it, but I actually laughed at the trailer.

Death Note

American Death Note remake? Well, Speed Racer will grab a ton of cash, but my gut tells me that an American studio will screw the pooch on this one. The Japanese live-action version will play in about 300 theaters on May 20 and 21 through Fathom Events which seems like a better idea than a western remake.

Harvet Dent’s Hidden Face

Monday, May 5th, 2008 at 9:52 am by Jami

We saw this trailer at our screening of Iron Man and I totally missed a gigantic reveal until reader Tyler Anderson sent along this screen shot:

Two Face

Click on that bad boy and you’ll see some disfiguration on the left side of Harvey’s face. Earlier in the preview we can see Harvey’s left side being doused in what appears to be gasoline.

You don’t need to activate your nerd powers to figure this one out. It’s clear that Harvey will live long enough to become the villain.

Coming off the nerd high of Iron Man, Dark Knight will ruin my pants for a good few months. Must. Buy. New. Pants!

Dark City Diretor’s Cut!

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008 at 9:39 am by Jami

Dark City Director's Cut

The only thing that would make this news even more amazing is if we also got a theatrical re-release. But a director’s cut of Dark City on DVD and Blu-Ray is pretty freaking awesome! This was one of my favorite movies of the 90’s. We get a new version of the movie with fifteen minutes of additional footage and new special features to celebrate its tenth anniversary. Dark City, the Director’s Cut drops July 29 on DVD and Blu-Ray.

Slightly related, if you ever find yourself driving down the George Washington Parkway into D.C. at night and manage to take a look to your left as you get close to the Key Bridge, you’ll see Georgetown University across the river all lit up and looking quite like Dark City, reason number one why you should think twice about enrolling.

Sleestacks Still Creepy

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008 at 2:33 pm by Jami

Sleestacks

From reader Tyler Anderson comes word that the Sleestacks in the upcoming Land of the Lost flick will be people in suits rather than CG. They creeped me out back then and these new Sleestacks creep me out now!

I think the use of practical creature effects is perfect for this kind of movie. For this movie to be a success, there has to be some element of cheese and nothing says cheese like a man in a suit! Still, I will most likely avoid this movie altogether. I might be convinced to watch it on TV. Maybe.

Thanks for the link Tyler.

War Games 2

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008 at 10:30 am by Jami

Hot on the heels of the direct to bargain bin Lost Boys 2 comes another blast from the past, War Games: The Dead Code.

Besides updating the setting and adding a terrorism angle, what is the difference between this movie and the original? And if it’s just a rehash, doesn’t that indicate that the original stands the test of time? So what if a young Matthew Broderick uses a dial up modem instead of a T1 line. The original was released in 1983. You’re telling me that in 25 years the only new twists you can come up with are a sexy computer program and the internet? If you’re going to be that lazy, just save your money and re-release the original.

Thanks to reader Wayne W for digging this up.

It’s Official! Guillermo del Toro Directs The Hobbit!

Friday, April 25th, 2008 at 9:24 am by Jami

Guillermo del Toro

Damn. I’ve run out of pants!

Does this look like the face of a Hobbit director to you? Cause it looks like the face of a Hobbit director to me!

It’s official! Guillermo del Toro has signed on to direct The Hobbit for New Line! He’s moving to New Zealand for four years after Hell Boy 2 drops to work with Peter Jackson and his Weta and Wingnut teams. There will be two films, The Hobbit and a sequel that fills in the period between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Rings.

We may have to wait until 2011 and 2012 to see these films. It also kind of sucks that in the mean time, we’ll be without del Toro movies in the theater. But I suspect there will be much awesomesauce four years from now.

If you’ll excuse me, I must now find new pants…
