Super Art Fight Teaser

If you missed our first Super Art Fight at the Ottobar, we have video footage of the whole night that’s being edited together. For now, we have this quick, thirty second teaser. There’s no audio so you can create your own soundtrack and soundeffects. I can’t wait to see more!

Art Fight is MEDIUM RARE!

Japan Noodle Fever

Last night, Jim, Nelly, Nick, and I brought Super Art Fight to the JapaNoodle Fever at the Ottobar. JapaNoodle Fever unites Bakubeni, Quaff, TsuShiMaMiRe, Zazen Boys, and Peelander Z into one night of J-Rock madness! Seriously this is the best rock show I’ve ever seen! Okay, so I don’t go to many rock shows. But I’m so glad I got the chance to live in a time when such things are possible and that I got to participate in the show in some small way.

I don’t know how it all started, but at some point, someone brought up the idea of drawing with Peelander Yellow at their Ottobar show since it was only a few days after Super Art Fight. Got in touch with the Pee People and Yellow agreed. When we showed up last night with our 4′x6′ battlefield, Yellow told us that the girls of TsuShiMaMiRe wanted to draw as well. Hells yeah! It was going to be a big freaking J-Rock art jam.

The Zazen Boys are only performing at the last stop on the tour in New York so we didn’t get to see them. Bakubeni kicked things off with a bang. Watching their lead singer Rayla kick the shit out of the stage and scream her little lungs out was amazing! She really got the crowd going and she even taught us a little Japanese so we could scream along.

Bakubeni’s set ended and we got started with the canvas. Nick and I took the left half while Mizue, Mari, and Yayoi of TsuShiMaMiRe attacked the lower right. Nick and I paced ourselves because we wanted to give ourselves enough room to go nuts later when Yellow joined up. The ladies took up an entire canvass and drew three cute cats, one with gigantic fun bags. The session ended fairly quickly as Quaff took the stage.

I was really looking forward to seeing Quaff. They far exceeded my expectations and just rocked the shit out of the bar! After they played “More than Blue” (which will easily stick in your head) MC Ukisemi (who wears a fucking awesome mask) got on the mic and started rambling in Japanese. His band mates held up signs with subtitles translating Ukisemi’s story about how he comes from heaven’s paradise and that he knows all the songs because he’s old. He asked if we wanted to hear a new song. Hells yeah! He got the drummer to kick out a beat, told the bass player to just hit an A, got one of the guitarist to jam on an A, and all of a sudden, they launched into “Beat It.” That’s right, “It doesn’t matter, who’s wrong or right. Just beat it!” The crowd went fucking nuts! They closed their set with another cover, and absolutely rocking version of “You’re Just Too Good To Be True.” God, I heart Quaff quite a bit.

As Quaff walked off the stage, Yellow ran up to the canvass and along with Nick, the three of us attacked. I can’t tell you how awesome it was to art jam with Yellow. It was like we were possessed by this strange spirit of awesomeness. No words, no plans, just throwing up as much ink as we could. It all worked. We somehow made Tsu Shi Ma Mi Re’s cats fit into the whole composition. It was over before we knew it. Yellow had a giant smile on his face and gave Nick and I huge hugs. Wow, if I could do this for the rest of my life it would be a dream come true!

TsuShiMaMiRe took the stage. Those three chicks fucking wail! I still have “Aircontrol and remote control” swimming in my headmeats. They’re working with cartoon network on the anime version of Power Puff Girls so they played the theme song they wrote for the show, Hyper Sweet Girls,” as well as Mojo Jojo’s theme. At one point, lead singer and guitarist Mari jumped into the audience while still wailing away as an audience member held the mic for her to sing. They’re amazing cute and badass at the same time.

After a short break, Peelander Z took the stage. Honestly, words cannot capture the absolute insanity of a Peelander Z show. Highlights include Pee Red hanging upsidedown playing bass, turning the entire audience into the rhythm section during “Mad Tiger,” some lady from the audience playing tonsil hockey with Pee Green, grabbing Makito from Quaff to play guitar and Kozaken from Bakubeni to play drums, Red stage diving and crowd surfing, turning the audience into a giant conga line/mosh pit, and of course, human bowling!

Goddamn, what a goddamn genius show! If you live in Philly, you can catch the tour tonight at the Khyber. If you’re in New York, you can catch the last show Sunday at the Music Hall of Williamsburg. If you’re anywhere near there, get your ass to the show.

I’m sure there will be more floating around out there, but for now check out this sexy photo from Nick!

Super Art Fight Has the Biggest Balls of Them All!

Super Art Fight was absolutely amazing, a perfect geek storm where plans and reality converged at the Ottobar. When it ended, we left humbled and awed. The show far exceeded our expectations. The full impact of what we accomplished hasn’t quite sunk in, but you can bet your ass December’s show will shake Baltimore to its core!

This sheer feat of awesomeness could not have been accomplished without our awesome crew, our special guests, and our artists. Massive love to the Ottobar for believing in us and having the faith to book us on the main stage. Giant hugs to the Morlock Enterprises crew for constructing and setting up the awesome rack that held up our canvasses and for mounting all of the canvasses between bouts! None of this would have been possible without Morlock. Great sloppy disco kisses to DJ Sheephead of the Megadrives for keeping the artists pumped while they arted with tasty jams. Keep December open because we totally want you back to spin for us again! Giant vinyl smoochies to Octopus Design for hooking us up with our very own Monskey Mascot. I expect we’ll be hearing a lot more about Monskey in the future. Drunken fuzzy hugs to Karmella’s Game for rocking out two sets in between our opening bouts. The audience never had a chance to get bored with you guys pumping everyone up! And great big metal horns to Headwounds for headlining. I wish more people stuck around to see you guys completely destroy the stage!

Marty and Ross, no live art show has ever had better commentators. Your running commentary really gave the whole night a professional feel. Dern, I wish we had a camera on you all night because that Hadron Collider with that brain guy, Wall-E, and King Kong was fucking awesome! Wish I could have seen the construction. Jamie and Mike, your opening bout really kicked things into high gear! Watching you guys compete inspired the rest of us to kick our games up a few notches. Garth and Chris, you two fucking went for it! Extra special props to Chris for creating our Wheel of Death. I can’t wait to see the Wheel of Death 2.0 at the December show.

Nick, what the fuck can I say. Super Art Fight would still be something we just talked about if it weren’t for you. You made this shit happen. You booked the club, the bands, the schedule. Dude, without you, some other fucks would have done this and we’d be sitting at home wondering what it would be like to be on stage drawing on giant canvas. Who knew that our chance meeting at some random art panel would have led to this madness! Thank you, Nick, for making our mad idea into reality.

Last but certainly not least, thank you to everyone who came out to the show. You guys, all of you, thank you so much. You guys showed us that an art show could indeed headline a club show. From every part of our hearts, bottom, middle, top, backside, thank you thank you thank you!

Keep your December calendars light because Super Art Fight will return in a big way! We’ve only just begun! I’ll try to do a proper recap sometime later, but for now, check out this awesome slideshow of the evening with photos by Matt Roth and “Feral Cow” by Headwounds.

SUPER ART FIGHT TOMORROW!

Friday, September 19th, 2008 at 10:35 am by Jami

Tomorrow night, Baltimore becomes a battle ground! Super Art Fight comes to the Ottobar. We’re really excited that we’ve made it this far. If you’re near Baltimore, come on by and witness the madness. Show starts at 9pm, doors open at 8pm. All the artists will have tables with swag to sell, including me for once! If you can’t make it, we have a film crew that will be recording the event. Once we get it all edited, we’ll upload the footage so everyone can share our insanity. And this is just the beginning!

White Rappers Hate Art Fight

White Rappers Hate Art Fight Stencil

What’s this? Could it be a stencil for great Art Fight justice?

So for those tuning in a bit late, this Saturday’s Super Art Fight is in fact the second time we’ve run the event. Our first show was met with insults on the part of one MC “I’m a ten year old homophobic pot head.” So instead of beating of dead horse (okay, so I’m still fucking bitter), we decided to turn MC Chris’s snub into an ad campaign. We sprayed some posters and shirts over at Nick’s place on Saturday. If you see some of us running around with them on, now you know why. The next step, get video of actual white rappers declaring they hate Art Fight right before they go on stage to perform at our show! Oh, the awesomeness!

Check out Nick’s Flickr page to see photos of the posters and shirts.

Super Art Fight is Next Saturday!

Friday, September 12th, 2008 at 9:05 am by Jami

You may well get sick of me extolling the awesome virtues of the Super Art Fight all next week. But serious, it’s going to be freaking awesome! Audrey and I will have a small merch table. Audrey will be selling some really cute Quintapod plushies that she’s sewn by hand. I’ve got some screen prints that I’ll be selling. I’ll have a video of both posted sometime next week. And of course, we got a whole box full of limited edition Super Art Fight Monskey toys for sale.

The suggestions for topics to draw are really great. Any ones we miss this time around will be saved for the next event so keep them coming. There are also some loose plans for an online version of Super Art Fight. The winners might get invited to participate in the live event. But we’ll have more on that once we actually set something up.

Next Saturday, September 20th, six artists attack the Ottobar with some of the sickest art you’ll ever see performed live! This is just the start people. It just gets better and better from here on!
