Monster Roll Needs to be a Feature Film!

Sushi chefs versus giant monsters!

That’s the premise behind Monster Roll. The team put together this short as a sort of proof of concept of the kind of film they’d like to see on the big screen, which just so happens to be the kind of film I’d like to see on the big screen. I love that there’s an underlying social message just like the old Godzilla flicks. At some level, Godzilla was a warning about the dangers of nuclear war. Monster Roll warns against the unbalance between what we kill and what we eat. Classic!

Although it doesn’t seem like there are solid plans to make this into an actual feature film, the more people see it and support, the more likely the team will be able to find a studio willing to fund it. I say let’s make this happen. We need more giant monster flick and this would make an excellent entry into the genre!

Who is Miles Morales? And Ultimate Spider-Man Fan Short

It’s probably little more than wishful thinking on my part, but I would absolutely love to see a live action Ultimate Spider-Man movie starring Miles Morales. I don’t know if Sony would ever do anything like that. Perhaps Marvel would if they ever reacquired the Spider-Man movie rights. But until miracles happen, we’ll have to turn to fan films like this to imagine what it would be like if Miles ever made it to the big screen.

Adam Levermore Wants to be a Graphic Designer on the S.H.I.E.L.D. Series So Badly That He Made This Fan Film

I was going to say something snarky like “How to apply for a graphic design job without actually showing any graphic design,” but then I watched this fan film/application again and noticed all the little things that I hadn’t paid attention to on the first go around. The signs, the name tags, the binders, the title cards, all of those little things had to seem real, so real, in fact, that unless you were specifically looking for them, you wouldn’t notice them. Absolutely brilliant. Design on a film set needs to service the story. And the little bits that Adam Levermore put together for this piece do just that.

Good luck, Adam. Even if you don’t get the S.H.I.E.L.D. gig, I expect we’ll be seeing your credits in many a film in years to come.

Awesome Asian Bad Guys

“This ends now!”

So this is a pretty fun project. Filmmakers Stephen Dypiangco and Patrick Epino are raising funds to produce a web series starring some classic Asian Bad Guys from 80s and 90s action films. I think it’s a fun way to feature Asian characters who never got the screen time they deserved. Also, villains tend to be more interesting than heroes anyway.

Thanks to Jonathan ‘Bongo’ Budisantoso for sending this my way!

The Bat Man of Shanghai

I think Canadian viewers can watch it here

Wolf Smoke’s “Bat Man of Shanghai” is one of the best interpretations of the material that I’ve ever seen! Set in the 1930’s, Catwoman, Bane, and Bat Man fight over the Scroll of Destiny. These shorts were broadcast on Cartoon Network’s as part of the DC Nation. The animation is so fiercely raw. Totally feels like one of the classic Shaw Brothers kung fu flicks except with TRON eyes. I’m also loving the redesigns of the costumes, although I think Catwoman’s is the most successful. Bane’s is a bit too close to the original for my taste, and I think more could have been done with Bats. But it’s still fucking aweseome! I need this as a regular series. NEED!

Gun Caliber TV Spot

“All I want to do right now is hit theses guys.”

I really wish this spot was for an actual Gun Caliber series. But it’s sort of a mock TV spot in the style of Kamen Rider series announcements.

Still, we can expect a full length short coming sometime in 2013. I can’t wait!

Z-Com, and Indy Zombie Short

I love that Kickstarter is giving indy directors the opportunity to create shorts and movies outside of the Hollywood sequel remake Ouroboros. Z-Com is one such project that needs our help. AZM Ally David Caceres and his friends are putting together a zombie short.

They’ve also produced a number of zombie PSAs including this one warning against amateurs choosing the katana as their weapon of choice to defend against the zombie hoard.

Head on over to their project and help keep indy films alive!
